What it is
Grinding takes the stump out below the ground. The grinder turns the wood into grindings, a mix of wood chips and dirt, until the stump is gone.
At the end of 2021 Doug upgraded to a top of the line, high-horsepower, remote-controlled machine: a Vermeer SC552. He says it is the only one like it in the area.

When you need it
- A tree company has taken a tree down and left the stump.
- An old stump is still sitting in the yard.
- You want to plant a new tree or bush in the same spot.
- The stump is on a bank or rough ground, where the 4x4 earns its keep.
What to expect
1 The tree comes down
Usually a tree company takes the tree down first. What is left behind is the stump.
2 Doug comes out for a free estimate
Call, and Doug comes out to take a look at the stump and the work site. The estimate is free.
3 You decide how it finishes
Can the machine get to it? Just the grind, or the clean-up too? Should the grindings, wood chips and dirt, be hauled away or left? Do you want topsoil, grass seed and hay? Will a bush or tree go back in the same spot?
4 The stump comes out
Doug grinds it out and cleans up the way you chose.
Buried lines: one customer wrote that Doug “took care of everything including contacting the locating company.” Mention any lines you know about at the estimate.

We threw quite a job in Doug's lap--a massive, 8 ft diameter double stump spruce with roots like tentacles across our side yard. Doug exceeded our expectations, clearing away stump and roots, re-grading and evening the surface, and consulting with us every step of the way. He's professional, courteous, and did all of that at what was a very reasonable price. Highly recommended!
Doug did an exceptional job. One of the stumps he removed was gigantic and had created an elevation in the yard. By the time he was done, the area was clean and level. He also was very prompt. I was on a deadline, and he completed the project early.

Is the estimate free?
Yes. Doug comes out and takes a look at the stump and the work site, and there is no charge for it.
How deep does the grinder go?
Up to 25 inches deep, and it can grind up to 31 inches high.
Can I plant in the same spot?
The 25-inch depth is what makes replanting in the same area possible. Tell Doug at the estimate if a bush or tree is going back in.
Can the grinder get into my yard?
Access is one of the first things Doug looks at on site. The machine is four-wheel drive and remote controlled, which makes rough ground easier.
What happens to the grindings?
Your choice: hauled away or left on site. More on the clean-up.
What does it cost?
Every stump and site is different, so Doug prices the job at the free estimate.
